Basic Printer is the brainchild of Nashville-based artist Jesse Gillenwalters, an indie-pop innovator whose music fuses analog synth textures, playful lyricism, and a DIY ethos into a genre-bending sound he affectionately calls “gloitchpop.” Raised in Binghamton, New York, Gillenwalters began crafting music in his teens, driven by curiosity and a desire to create without constraints. His early experiments, often recorded in basements and bedrooms, laid the foundation for a sound that is both whimsical and emotionally resonant.
The moniker "Basic Printer" originated as a placeholder but evolved into a fitting emblem of Gillenwalters' artistic identity -merging the mechanical with the human, the digital with the analog. His relocation to Nashville exposed him to a vibrant music community, refining his raw instincts into a more polished, yet still idiosyncratic, musical approach. Influenced by artists like Black Moth Super Rainbow and video game music, he embraced synthesizers, particularly the Roland JUNO-106, to craft his distinctive soundscapes.
In 2018, Basic Printer released his debut album, Good Weird, a kaleidoscopic journey through synth-pop landscapes that celebrate individuality and self-expression. Tracks like “Good Weird” featuring Del Florida exemplify his ability to blend erratic electronic elements with soulful vocals, creating an infectious anthem for embracing one's uniqueness. The album's playful yet poignant tracks, such as “Hard Look” and “When Ya Gonna,” showcase his knack for combining quirky instrumentation with introspective lyrics.
Beyond his recordings, Gillenwalters is known for his immersive fan experiences, offering deep dives into the lore of his albums through annotated lyrics, production demos, and interactive narratives. His commitment to authenticity and connection shines through in these endeavors, inviting listeners into his creative universe.
With a discography that includes multiple albums and EPs, and a reputation for engaging live performances, Basic Printer continues to push the boundaries of indie-pop, inviting audiences to find joy in the unconventional and the "good weird."
Spirit of the Bear quickly became one of the most fresh and exciting bands to emerge in the Ohio music scene with their unique blend of indie rock, pop, and electronic sensibilities coupled with their affinity for pop songwriting. The band’s years of musical experience are accentuated by their use of two keyboard players, bringing a unique depth to their sound. Consisting of James Harker (lead vocals, guitar), Danny Svenson (keyboards), Ethan Schwendeman (keyboards), Nate Gelfand (Bass), and Jamie Vitullo (Drums), the band has shared the stage with acts such as Crowded House, Our Lady Peace, Ra Ra Riot, and Robert DeLong, among others. The members of Spirit of the Bear have 3 dogs and 5 cats, collectively.
Emerging from Maine, Night Hawk began as a songwriting experiment between Colter Adams and Peyton Semjen to compose songs inspired by the painter, Edward Hopper. The band quickly drew the attention of Northeast artists and audiences alike, culminating in collaborations with the Whitney Museum of Art and the Edward Hopper House. With Before We Begin, Adams and Semjen expand the scope of their music beyond Hopper’s world, but remain fixated on his aesthetics: thresholds, isolation, and interplay between illuminating light and clouded intention.
Before We Begin chronicles the different seasons of growing up and the stings and triumphs of coming into one's own, including relationships stuck in time and never truly resolved, long winters that far overstay their welcome, the accompanying seasonal restlessness and boredom, and the excitement of a crush as ephemeral as a New England summer. Night Hawk's debut album stands in the doorway between adolescence and adulthood, with a face in each direction, haunted and inspired by childhood memories and the anxious anticipation of what's next.
